R is for Résumé

Definition: a French word literally meaning “a summary”

Pronunciation: \’rez-oo-mey\

Function: noun

Usage (by the unemployed):

Good: When a well-crafted summary of you in any form (e.g. 2-page document, 1-minute elevator speech, 90-second video clip) comes across like a movie review, it will entice the audience you are pitching to want to see how the rest of your story would look and feel unfolding in their theaters.

Bad: If you don’t like the French and therefore believe in the non-accented form of the word, it will at best be a tool allowing you to pick up from where you left off, i.e. “resume” your career.

Ugly: Résumés are rejected more often than they are accepted. Even if lucky enough to be granted a subsequent interview in which you provide a longer screening of you, your plot lines, and your sense of adventure, most of the time it is still more likely you will be rejected than accepted. Until you reach zen, it may be difficult to acknowledge that nobody plays well in every theater or in front on every audience.

R is also for Responsibility

Definition: having a duty to perform an act to protect or enhance the vitality of someone or something else

Usage (by the unemployed):

Good: The belief that what you do impacts the health and vitality of people you care about is a great motivator to recover from the Anger of unemployment and complete the journey to Zen.

Better: Showing in your résumé your historical willingness to accept responsibility, and demonstrating in subsequent interviews how responsible you are for the welfare of others (even your employers) will further increase your chances of success in finding both employment and fulfillment.

Bad: With responsibility comes risk. If you are uncomfortable taking calculated risks, then you will probably not be good assuming responsibility either.

—– Unemployment Experience for some —–

R is for Religion

Definition: a belief that there are causes behind every life event, and that those causes usually push us to learn, grow and connect

Usage (by the unemployed):

Good: Finding comfort and personal truth in any belief system makes it easier to travel through difficult times of life, and it even makes it easier to re-create your self so that you can experience a resurrection at the end of the journey rather than proceeding after personal disaster as a zombie… alive in body, dead in spirit.

Bad: Both those who reject all religion as harmful fantasy AND those who blindly follow a belief system, may find it difficult to follow paths that they cannot see or predict the end of; thus they may miss some opportunities that would be really fun and worthwhile, and meant just for them.
